Today ORT College
Built on a narrow steep plot on the western slope of
Givat Ram, the ORT School of Engineering stands on
the western edge of the Hebrew University campus.
The natural conditions necessitated considerable
topographical adjustments. The building’s massive
fortress-like design was inspired by the “vernacular”
fabric of the old city, where houses seem to rise from the
ground blending naturally in the landscape. In keeping
with city’s building regulations the structure’s facades are
stone clad. But bare concrete was used in the interiors
and advanced building technologies were utilized as well
as reusable industrial fiberglass molds, which led to a
significant reduction in both building materials and in the
structure’s total weight.
The building’s plan is similar to that of the Leo
Baeck Education Center in Haifa, in terms of its design
and materials and the division of its masses, simulating
the various uses in an urban environment. Two internal
“streets,” each crossing through a wing, flow toward a
large stepped “square” in the form of an urban forum,
