The architects were asked to adapt the building’s design
to the topography of the plot allocated for the library,
situated at the top of a hill. Due to this restriction, the
entire building was formed in the shape of a hill, with
the main library floor situated on the submerged ground
level. The plot’s form necessitated facing the main façade
toward the west. To avoid the entry of direct sunlight, the
façade was fabricated in a meshed network of pergolas
and concrete beams covered with climbing plants.
Seeking to maintain a connection between the two
levels of the building, a full height acoustic wall was built
that encloses the staircase, with artwork commissioned
by the architects from John Byle. The building won the
Council for a Beautiful Israel prize in 1986, as well as the
award for the incorporation of art in architecture.
Recently the internal spaces of the library were
redesigned by other architects, who also added a new
basement level to the building.
