1953–56 Rachel Cinema,
                            Ashkelon

                            (demolished)

Rachel Cinema was built near a commercial center and
park in the heart of Ashkelon’s Afridar neighborhood
on the initiative of Yaakov Zalkin, a French immigrant to
the city. Unlike Keren Cinema in Beer Sheva, which was
distinguished by its official appearance and openness to
the view, Rachel Cinema comprised two closed blocks
with slanted tiled roofs that resemble barn structures.
Although there is some similarity to the culture houses the
firm planned during that decade, Rachel Cinema does
not give away its purpose at first glance. Despite the
simple exterior, the 760-seat venue was designed with
remarkable elegance in its hanging light fixtures (designed
by the firm), decorative stone walls and acoustic ceiling
