The “National Book House” or “National Library” was
established in 1892 by the B’nai B’rith Organization,
becoming the Jewish National and Hebrew University
Library in 1925, with the founding of the Hebrew
University on Mount Scopus. During the 1948 War of
Independence, when the campus was under Jordanian
rule, the books were dispersed between various buildings
in Jerusalem, until 1960, when they were regathered and
placed in a designated building on the University’s new
campus in Givat Ram. The building’s design project was
given to three teams of architects who had proposed
plans in a competition. Thus, the Nadler architect firm
gained the opportunity to work on its first in a long series
