1960–62 Residential Neighborhood,

Site plan, 1960 In 1960 Shulamit and Michael Nadler were invited

travel to Accra, the capital of Ghana. The Nadlers were

1962 ,' קוטג:308 'עמ whose construction they were also to supervise.
309 The neighborhood included seven identical cottages
set around two apartment buildings, a commercial
center and a swimming pool. Another building, lower
and easy to duplicate, was also planned. The feature
common to all of the buildings is an open pilotis level
– a salient component of the firm’s building projects
in Israel. However, in Accra the familiar heavy design
was combined with bold patches of black, white and
red, giving the compound an exotic-modernist aspect,
which was often characteristic of the designs of Israeli
architects working in Africa at the time.
The cottages were planned as double-story
structures with an open ground level situated at the edge
of an entrance hall, and a living area on the floating top
floor, with a living room at its center overlooking a large
yard through wide windows. Both apartment buildings
rise eight-stories high and comprise two units: a central
unit with expansive apartments each covering the entire
floor space, and a unit with an elevator shaft and small
servant rooms. An open staircase tower and bridges
connect the two units.
