                           These libraries were
                     the first in the country to
                     implement the “open shelf”
                     system – reading halls that
                     also function as storage
                     spaces. Consequently,
                     direct entry of sunlight had
                     to be avoided. Their plans
                     utilize artificial lighting,
                     internal courtyards and
                     apertures to enable the
                     entry of soft natural light.
